Try These Tricks to Regain Your Focus at Work

Focus is something we take for granted when we have it, yet it’s becoming one of the hardest things to hold onto. Our days are filled with notifications, meetings and constant context switching. More often than not, it’s not a lack of motivation that holds us back, but the environments and habits we work within. Small changes can make a bigger difference than we realise, so here are five simple ways to improve your ability to focus.

Try These Tricks to Regain Your Focus at Work
  1. Switch up your workspace
Try a different desk, room or even a new sitting position. Not only can this help relieve aches and pains that quietly become distractions but it also gives your brain a reset. If you work from home, having two work setups can be surprisingly effective. In an office, try a meeting room or phone booth for a change of scenery.
  2. Listen to focus music
I’ve recently discovered Brain.fm which is a music app designed to support focus. I don’t fully understand the science behind it, but it uses specific audio techniques to encourage brainwave states linked to concentration and performance. I’m not entirely convinced… but it’s been worth experimenting with.
  3. Be mindful of what you’re consuming
We power our brain with what we eat and drink so it only makes sense that if your focus is lacking then the fuel is a good place to start. Healthy snacks can help maintain focus by providing a steady supply of energy and glucose. Nuts, berries, dark chocolate and eggs are all great options for staying alert throughout the day (or so I’ve heard).
  4. Get up and do 20 jumping jacks
Any movement helps reset focus but what takes under a minute and can be done at your desk? 20 jumping jacks. Plus it’s ridiculous enough to break a mental slump (and maybe make you smile).
  5. Get enough sleep
This one feels obvious, but it makes all the difference (speaking from personal experience). Working late or waking up early for a “5–9 before the 9–5” might feel productive, but not if it costs you sleep. The extra hours gained are often lost through lower focus and energy the next day. Not only this but insufficient sleep is directly linked to an increased risk of chronic diseases so getting enough of it is a win-win for both present and future you.

You may be thinking that you’ve heard all these before and you are well aware they help boost productivity. But if you’ve read this far then you probably struggle with focus so unless you’ve tried them all and they haven’t worked (which is frankly impossible) then start implementing them into your daily routine and you will be amazed at the difference it makes.
